Accessing the Shared Server (nh2 server)
The Shared server (nh2 server) can be accessed on campus using Windows Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. Depending on how often you will be connecting to the server, there are two methods of connecting.
If you are connecting to the Shared server from off-campus, it will be necessary to use the UCLA VPN Client before a connection can be made.
Initiate a Server Connection
If you connect to the Shared server (nh2 server) from multiple computers, it's best if you access the server from Start (Windows button):
- From Start (Windows button), simply type: nh2.gseis.ucla.edu and then hit Enter.
- An authentication window will appear.
- Enter your GSE&IS username and password and hit OK.
Double-click on the research (or adminunits) volume and locate your shared folder to gain access to your data.
When you are done accessing your files, please log off your Windows session to terminate the connection. Otherwise others will still be able to access your Shared server (nh2 server) files.
Mapping a Drive
If you plan on connecting to the Shared server (nh2 server) on a regular basis from the same computer, you could map the server to a drive letter on your computer. To map a drive, follow these instructions:
- Right-click on This PC. Select Map network drive from the contextual menu.
The Map Network Drive dialog will be displayed. - In the Drive field enter: S: (or any arbitrary letter).
- In the Folder field enter: nh2.gseis.ucla.eduresearch.
Note: If you connect to the 'adminunits' share, enter: nh2.gseis.ucla.eduadminunits instead. - Click the Reconnect at logon checkbox.
- ClickFinish.
Ole Server Access
The computer will initiate a connection to the Shared server (nh2 server). You will be prompted for your GSE&IS username and password. After entering this information into the authentication window, click OK.
If you open up This PC you will see the Shared server (nh2 server) mounted as your S: drive.
When you are done accessing your files, please log off your Windows session to terminate the connection. Otherwise others will still be able to access your Shared server (nh2 server) files via the mapped drive.

For questions regarding accessing the files server via Windows, please contact ETU at (310) 825-1911 or by emailing etu@gseis.ucla.edu.
Accessing the Home Server
A Home server can be accessed on or off campus using Windows Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. Depending on how often you will be connecting to the server, there are two methods of connecting.
Note: If you are connecting to a Home server from off-campus, it is necessary to use the UCLA VPN Client before a connection can be made.
Initiate a Connection via Run
If you connect to a Home server from multiple computers, it's best if you access the server via Run:
- From the Start menu, clickRun.
- In the Open field, you will enter the name of the server on which your folder resides. For instance, if you are a faculty member, enter: faculty.gseis.ucla.edu%username%faculty%username% where %username% is your GSE&IS username. If you are a staff member, enter: staff.gseis.ucla.edu%username%staff%username%. If you are a student, enter: students.gseis.ucla.edu%username%students%username%.
Note: If you are a member of more than one group and do not know the location of your folder, please contact ETU to ask which server you should access.
- Enter your GSE&IS username and password and hit OK.
An Explorer window will open displaying several directories on the Home server. Double click on the staff, students, or faculty (depending which pertains to you) directory to gain access to your data.
When you are done accessing your files, please log off your Windows session to terminate the connection. Otherwise others will still be able to access your Home server files via the run command.
Initiate a Connection by Mapping the Drive

- Right-click on My Computer. Select Map Network Drive from the contextual menu.
The Map Network Drive dialog will be displayed. - In the Drive field enter: H:.

If you open up My Computer you will see the Home server mounted to your H drive.
Server Access
When you are done accessing your files, please log off your Windows session to terminate the connection. Otherwise others will still be able to access your Home server files via the mapped drive.
