Receiver Clean-Up Utility

After uninstalling Receiver and restarting the system, the following steps guide to remove any unnecessary files manually that might have been left on the client system.

It is important to remember that certain items mentioned in the following section might not exist on your system depending on the Receiver package used for the installation and how the package was deployed, for example per-machine against per-user installation.
More information on this is available in the Receiver and Plug-ins section of the Citrix eDocs for your version.

Following are the steps for cleaning up the file system:

  1. On the system in use, show all hidden system files and folders (Explorer’s Tools > Folder Options menu item).

  2. In the %userprofile%AppData folder

    • Delete the ICAClient folder if it exists.

    • If the Program Neighborhood Agent was present on the system, the following folder might also exist and should be deleted:
      CitrixPNAgent

    • For more recent Citrix Receiver releases, remove the following folders in AppData if they exist:

      • CitrixReceiver
      • CitrixAuthManager
      • CitrixSelfService
    • On Windows 7, the files and folders mentioned in the preceding must be deleted in both of the following locations:

      • AppDataLocal
      • AppDataRoaming
  3. Repeat everything mentioned in preceding Step 2 for the C:UsersDefault folder as well (C:Documents and SettingsDefault User on Windows XP).

  4. If they exist, ensure the following folders are removed from the directory in which the Receiver was installed. For example, the default install directory is %programfiles%Citrix (%programfiles(x86)%Citrix on 64-bit systems).

    • %programfiles%CitrixICA Client
    • %programfiles%CitrixAuthManager
    • %programfiles%CitrixSelfServicePlugin

Complete the following steps to clean up the system registry:
Caution! Refer to the Disclaimer at the end of this article before using Registry Editor.

  1. Using Registry Editor, navigate to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key and delete the following keys if they exist:

    • Citrix.ICAClient* (delete all instances that exist – such as Citrix.ICAClient.2 or Citrix.ICAClient.2.1)
    • Citrix.ICAClientProp* (delete all instances – such as Citrix.ICAClientProp.2 or Citrix.ICAClientProp.2.1 might exist)
    • ica
    • In the CLSID key, delete any keys whose names begin with 238F
    • InstallerUpgradeCodes9B123F490B54521479D0EDD389BCACC1
    • MimeDatabaseContent Typeapplication/x-ica
    • Wfica
    • WinFrameICA
    • ICA Client
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER and delete the following in SOFTWARECitrix if they exist:
    • ICA Client
    • PNAgent
    • Dazzle
    • PrinterProperties
    • Receiver
    • XenDesktopDesktopViewer
  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE and delete the following keys if they exist (these keys are located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432Node on 64-bit systems):

    • CitrixAuthManager
    • CitrixCitrixCAB
    • CitrixDazzle
    • CitrixICA Client

      • ICA Client
      • PNAgent
      • DesktopViewer
      • ReceiverInsideForOnline

    • Depending on the Receiver package installed, delete one of the following keys in MicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall if they exist:
      • CitrixOnlinePluginFull
      • CitrixOnlinePluginPackWeb
  4. After uninstalling the Receiver software, any custom Receiver-side registry keys that icaclient.adm created remain in the registry as well. If you reinstall Receiver, these policies might be enforced possibly causing unexpected behavior. If you want to remove these customizations as well, delete the following ICA Client keys:

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwarePoliciesCitrixICA Client
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesCitrixICA Client
    • On 64-bit systems, ensure that the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodePoliciesCitrixICA Client key does not exist either.

The Citrix developers have – finally – released a tool that can help many admins with deploying the Citrix Client in their environment.

The Citrix Receiver CleanUp Utility should remove traces from all previous versions of the Receiver and also older versions called Citrix Online Plugin.

See here a full Download List of all Citrix Clients versions
There was a serious need for this tool since a lot of issues have been found when installing Citrix Receiver, when older versions or traces of it are still installed.
I have received more than 10.000 (!) hits on this article so far, so it is safe to state that the majority of Citrix admins and users were and are struggling with the installation/configuration/uninstallation of the latest Citrix clients (Receiver).

Issues encountered when traces traces from older versions are found:

The following issues have been encountered:

  • An error message after launching an application caused by older registry keys.
  • 2 different icons in the system tray.
  • Both pnamain.exe and receiver.exe loaded at the same time.
  • Missing options after right clicking the icon in the system tray.
  • Sudden occurences of no application being lauched after clicking it.
  • No information/warning that older clients have been detected, and no option to uninstall it automatically.
  • Pass-through Authentication randomly or not at all working.

Unfortunately it does not uninstall all existing Citrix Clients on a pc, it merely cleans up registry keys and files. There is an option to backup the keys and files, and to run things silently.

So the administrators still need to write scripts to launch the uninstall application, which is since then last years the executable, which sounds like a virus, TrolleyExpress.exe.
Depending on the version and 32 or 64-bit the TrolleyExpress.exe is found in a different location.

A real pity because there is a great need of a tool that does the uninstallation silently, and without reboot. We hope Citrix is working on that…

Since Citrix doesn’t have a tool somebody else wrote one already some time ago: A great free tool to help uninstall ALL previous versions is UNICA from Gourami: http://www.gourami.eu/products/unica.html

Download

With a simple command line it is possible to uninstall and install your client. “UNICA searches the uninstall information of a workstation for every product which was released by Citrix and uninstalls it. UNICA waits till everything is finished uninstalling, and then launches the installation command line for deploying the new client.

A downside of the tool is the following: “Because UNICA uninstalls every product that is released by Citrix, it also uninstalls the presentation server console“. Aparantly Citrix GoToMeeting is not uninstalled (at least the version I had) but that probably doesn’t count for other Citrix apps.

Note it does not run on servers, just in case somebody accidentally runs it on a Citrix server, your Citrix XenApp is not uninstalled from your server.
I found it very useful, and a time saver.

So the Citrix Receiver CleanUp Utility is a tool to run after the uninstallation of before the installation of the Citrix Client.

I have problems with cached Receiver files/directories/icons. How do I clean them up or reset the receiver settings?

The newer versions of Receiver have the option to RESET RECEIVER settings. Very nicely hidden in About Citrix receiver > Reset Citrix Receiver

Basically the executuable cleanup.exe will run, and removes the settings from the current store you had configured.

Run the following commands:

C:Program Files (x86)CitrixSelfServicePluginCleanUp.exe –cleanUser
Note: ‘U’ must be capitalized in the parameter

Reset Citrix Receiver To Default Settings

Adding the following switch allows for silent execution without pop-up:
-cleanUser -silent

Resetting Receiver to factory defaults removes the following items:

  • All accounts and stores
  • All apps delivered by the Self-Service Plug-in, along with their icons and registry keys
  • All file type associations created by the Self-Service Plug-in
  • Cached files and saved passwords
  • Per-user registry settings that are user preferences and, for per-machine installations, all user-specific registry settings
  • Access Gateway registry settings for Receiver

Resetting Receiver does not impact the following items:

  • Receiver or Plug-in installation
  • Per-machine ICA lockdown settings
  • GPOs
